The Alps are beckoning. Starting tomorrow, the climbers will be able to do their thing in the high mountains. Today it’s one more opportunity for the sprinters. Because even though the stage moves inland, it’s still on reasonable flat terrain. Besides, it’s only 121 kilometres, so it’s a very short stage.
On the 5th of May the 96th edition of the Giro d’Italia starts with a prologue of 8.7 kilometers in the Danish city of Herning, the birth place of Bjarne Riis. This relatively small city will function as a background for the start of, according to many cycling fans, the most beautiful Grand Tour of the year. A remarkable fact about this edition is its start in Denmark. Rumor had it that this year’s Giro would take off in Washington D.C. but in the end they opted for the more realistic option after all. Interesting to know is that these Danish roads are the most Northern of all roads ever used in a Grand Tour. Enough trivia, on to the race!
